Got a few minutes to play in the garage and decided to work on Project #4 “Look at Me.”

I took the “bumpers” off and removed the wrap so I can wrap them in “chrome” vinyl so I can merge the quotes and officially have “chrome bumpers”

This while the not-a-project-car projects continue. Got some more pieces coming so I can make some real progress on the big project

Whew! Time flies, cant believe its been almost a month since the last update and sadly not too much to update. The conversion is moving along slowly. I had a few time consuming events in the last month so hoping to get some progress, but heres a small picture update of where its at.

What is going to control fuel and spark?

I got a brand new, unused AEM 506 ECU

If running minilites, avoid the hammer. If you can hit the ear of a knockoff without hitting the spoke of a minilite, you’ve got a better aim than me.

I purchased the knock-on tool kit from RD that avoids me hammering the lovely minilites, but thanks for the heads-up!

In a roundabout way I have been working on the 4 initial projects while concurrently being fully immersed in the major project I threw upon myself. Luckily, I’m sort of done with 3 of the 4 small projects, and am putting the final one on hold as I decide which path I want to go down with the headlights. No point in putting an effort in there if the cars just sitting in the garage.

Heres a few pics of the after-product of the “chrome bumpers”

Overall, Im happy with the look. Its not perfect but it accomplishes the job I wanted to get done with the chrome wrap. Now I can focus my time and attention on making progress with the ITBs/EFI conversion

If I remember correctly, British regulations at the time our cars were designed had a minimum height for headlamp position. The mark one Austin Healey Sprite complied with regulation with “bug eyes” or “frog eyes”. Lotus used the more elegant but complicated pop up lights. I don’t know if there are or were similar regulations in the USA.

One of the reasons the post-74 MGB had such a raised ride height, was to get the headlights up high enough to meet new US regulations. Which would have killed the Elan, if the market hadn’t done that already.

Another …TWO MONTHS… flew by. I got sidetracked with a whole thing that was trying to get rid of that Cosworth 190e 2.3-16 that I gave up on / got bored with. I needed this 80s car to be a fun driver while I work on the EFI Project, and it simply didnt want to so I sent it to Bring a Trailer, No-Reserve. I had an idea to share that experience and it went completely off-the-rails.

I replaced it with another 80s German car, I wont spam yall here with it but if you are subscribed you would know. So close to 500 subscriptions which is crazy to me for so many reasons. Anyways, back to this car. I have nearly all of the pieces I need to complete the project, but have some “major” things I need to do to get there. Im nearly done with the E30 so once thats done, I will officially put the Lotus in its natural position (on jack stands) ((jk)) … but that will be the major motivator to get this finished ASAP. For now, a totally pointless update just to let you know its still here and Im still here. A few pics for your troubles of clicking here.

My CAD design for a coilpack mount, under the carbs to make it appear OEM

Still very much love this car. Both of my ‘toys’ are FR setup and have forward hinged bonnets haha

Queens English Car show is early in the year and my goal is to have it done and driving by then

Alright, motivation is growing and I finally committed to getting it done. Cars up on jackstands and things are happening…

Draining the radiator and coolant was ‘fun’ because both outlets were going to cause a mess. Ultimately I went with the mess from the radiator than trying to control the mess that would’ve came out from the block drain.

I think I want to still drain whatever is left in the block because this coolant was pretty nasty. Any tips on preventing it from spraying on the headers? Its a tight space

Heres the spring the builder used for the hood. Look like crazy overkill and is a nightmare at this point to try and remove by myself. I will get it off and I think I would love the ‘correct’ part

So now, just for fun I threw on the ITBs to give me motivation to get it done. They are just sitting on there because will need to come off several more times before I actually need to bolt it on.

Simon, that spring looks correct. It’s a fairly unique part. What makes you think it is

incorrect?

Im totally clueless, so it could absolutely be correct!

I recall seeing it relatively easy to remove the spring so that I can remove the hood, but maybe I saw that wrong. Its quite stiff, so maybe mine being a ‘new’ one and most being ‘old’ is the difference.

It can be difficult. I made a small hook thingie from a paint can opener. Helps

a lot. It also helps to have the hood / bonnet as vertical as possible to keep the spring as loose as possible.

Have a look at Bonnet spring - #7 by Graham_B

It gives details of my cheap and simple solution. After a couple of times it gets much easier.

Spent my Friday & Saturday nights post-kiddos bedtime to try and make some progress. Seeing as how you guys suggested in the other thread that I can address the tooth that needs to be shaved off later, I decided the goal was crank pulley & Crank Sensor Mount. I ended up needing to put the rear back down to get the front up, my low rise jack wouldnt get under the nose when it was pointed down…

Just to add some perspective on this, I was quite nervous how the crankshaft pulley would be to R&R, and felt that the mount would be simple. This proved to be reserve of reality. The QED Toothed Crankshaft pulley went in quite easily, whereas the Sensor Mount proved I needed both more hands, and smaller ones. A pair of pics from the end of Friday night.

Trying to think of how I could hold all of the above together while I try to get it all back inside the tight space with no additional hands forced me to think creatively. The solution (for me) was magnets!… Took a few tries, but I was able to get it installed and basically cross this off the list and shift back to that harness.

…still no reply from QED about selling me just the harness & ECU, so I trudge on with the Focus harness…
